What fits in the van

Move One Room or a Whole Houseshare

It is the last Saturday of your contract, the room has to be empty by ten, and everything you own is in nine bin bags and a suitcase with one working wheel.

Which van size do you need? Transit for one room. Luton for a whole houseshare.

Small moves are what we do most, and small is what the Transit van is built for. It holds 10.6 cubic metres, which is roughly a single room with the bed, desk, boxes and a bike still in it. The Luton is almost twice the space at 18.9 cubic metres and has a tail lift, which suits a whole houseshare or a flat you have been splitting with two other people.

Only moving a handful of things? Use a driver and van, with packing help available if time is tight.

Only shifting a handful of things? A driver and van for a single-room move is usually all it takes. Short on time before a deadline, and we can have the room boxed and labelled before the van arrives.

Check flatpack furniture before moving day Some low-cost units are cheaper to replace than move.

One thing worth settling before the day. Flatpack desks and wardrobes bought for a student room rarely survive a second disassembly, because the chipboard around the cam fixings strips out. A £40 unit that will not go back together can cost more in van time than it does to replace.

Hourly rates, VAT included

Check the Real Hourly Rates Before You Book

Every rate below includes VAT, and that matters more than it sounds. Some movers quote before VAT and add the 20% at checkout, so a £60 hourly rate lands as £72 on the invoice. Ours is the number you pay. Students take 10% off the total on top, and it still applies when a parent is doing the booking and paying.

  • Driver only

    Transit van £50 /hr
    Luton van £75 /hr
  • Driver and 1 mover

    Transit van £90 /hr
    Luton van £100 /hr
  • Driver and 2 movers

    Transit van £110 /hr
    Luton van £120 /hr

Access costs more than distance

Clearing a fifth-floor room with no lift takes longer than a ground-floor move three miles further away, and on an hourly booking the clock is what you are paying for, not the mileage. Tell us the floor, the stairs and the parking situation when you ask, and the quote will land close to the final bill.

Hourly or a fixed price

Prefer a single number to a running clock? Small loads and single items can be quoted as a fixed price instead, and longer-distance moves are always quoted in writing before the day. Hourly works out cheaper on a packed, ready room where the job is genuinely short. Fixed pricing suits a move where you would rather not be watching the time.

Industry guides put a single London student room at £150 to £300, and a full accommodation move at £300 to £600. Your price comes from your own details, not from an average. You can also see the full rate card for every van and crew size.

Charges that sit on top

  • Journeys over five miles Local rates cover journeys up to five miles, with an agreed distance fee beyond that.
  • Evenings and early mornings Work between 7pm and 8am costs £10 extra per hour and carries a 1.5-hour minimum.
  • Weekend bookings Weekends also carry a 1.5-hour minimum booking.
  • Central London congestion charge Driving into the zone during charging hours adds £18, which is exactly what Transport for London charges us.

Minimum booking

Pay for the Hour You Use, Not Two

Most London movers set a two-hour minimum booking. Ours is one.

  • The London standard 2 hours Minimum booking, even on a single room
  • GT Removals 1 hour Then 30-minute steps on driver-only and driver-and-one bookings

On a single-room move that is the difference between paying for the time the job actually takes and paying for an hour nobody used. A job that finishes at 90 minutes is billed at 90 minutes.

Handling and cover

Know What Your Laptop Is Covered For

Your laptop holds three years of coursework. Your bike is how you get to lectures. Both go into the van wrapped and strapped down, not stacked loose against a wardrobe.

Every job carries £30,000 goods in transit insurance and £5 million public liability cover, so if something is damaged in transit there is a policy behind it and not a conversation.

The crew who turn up are our own employed team and not agency drivers booked for the morning. That is why customers name them individually in the reviews.

Tenancy dates and peak weeks

Book around your tenancy date, not against it

Halls empty on a single day, and private house shares changed this year. An early slot, or the day before where your contract allows it, is the biggest saving available on an hourly booking.

  • Saturday 20 June 2026

LSE and University of London halls on 31, 39, 40 and 42-week contracts all departed on this day. When an entire building moves out at once, the lift and the loading bay queue.

  • 5 September 2026

The same halls empty again for 50 and 51-week contracts. Late June and early September are the two weeks when slots go first.

  • 1 May 2026

The Renters' Rights Act took effect. Fixed-term student tenancies in private rentals became rolling assured periodic tenancies, and tenants can now give two months' notice at any point. Shelter's guide to ending a student tenancy (opens in a new tab) has the detail.

  • 1 June to 30 September, every year

The only window in which a landlord can require a shared student house back, on four months' notice. Halls and most purpose-built accommodation run on licences and are not affected, so private move-out dates now spread across four months instead of landing in the same fortnight.

The Congestion Charge runs from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, but only from noon to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays.

Weekend bookings do carry a 1.5-hour minimum, so the sums work best on a move that was never going to be a quick one anyway.

How much does a student move in London cost?
A Transit van and driver is £50 an hour including VAT, so a two-hour single-room move comes to £100, and £90 after the 10% student discount. Larger jobs with two or three crew run from £90 to £120 an hour. The final figure depends on the van, the crew, the floor and the access, and you get the price before you book.
What van and crew do I need for a single room?
A Transit with the driver handles most single rooms, and its 10.6 cubic metres will take a bed, a desk, boxes and a bike. Add a second mover if you are on an upper floor with no lift, because two people on the stairs usually costs less in the end than one person taking twice as long.
Can I share a van with a housemate and split the cost?
Yes, and it is the cheapest thing you can do. If you are both heading to the same part of London we can collect from both addresses on one booking. The catch is that both rooms need to be packed before the van pulls up, because one unpacked room burns hourly time that you are both paying for.
Do you move at weekends and in the evening?
We start at 8am seven days a week. Weekend bookings carry a 1.5-hour minimum, and work between 7pm and 8am costs £10 extra per hour on top of the standard rate. Short-notice moves are often possible, so it is worth calling even when the date is close.
How far ahead should I book a student move?
Book as soon as the date is fixed. Late June and early September are the busiest weeks in London because halls empty on set days, and those slots go first. A week or two of notice is comfortable, though we will always try to help sooner.
Can you store my things over the summer?
Storage can be added to the booking, so belongings go from your old room straight into storage and come back when your next place is ready. It saves hauling everything home in June and back again in September.
