What should you expect to pay for your London move?
Expect a London man and van price to start from ยฃ50 per hour for driver-only help, with higher rates for extra movers or a Luton van. Your final bill comes from the crew, van, booked time and any agreed London extras such as parking or road charges. Most first-time bookers focus on the hourly rate first. That makes sense, because it is the number you see in adverts, but it gives you an incomplete view of the job. A small move across London can be simple if parking is close, the lift works and everything is packed. The same load takes longer when the van parks down the road, furniture needs careful handling, or the route enters central London during charging hours. So the fair question is simple: what exactly does the price include, how long is the minimum booking, and what extras are agreed before the move starts?
The minimum booking changes the price
Published rates give you the starting point, then the minimum booking turns that rate into the amount you actually pay. At GT Removals, we publish crew-based rates, and the van and crew are included in the hourly price during standard hours. Our standard hourly rates run from ยฃ50 for a driver only with a Transit van up to ยฃ120 for a driver plus two movers with a Luton van. The Luton van adds to the rate at every crew size, and each extra person adds again on top.| Crew and van | Hourly rate |
|---|---|
| Driver only, Transit van | ยฃ50 per hour |
| Driver only, Luton van | ยฃ75 per hour |
| Driver plus one mover, Transit van | ยฃ90 per hour |
| Driver plus one mover, Luton van | ยฃ100 per hour |
| Driver plus two movers, Transit van | ยฃ110 per hour |
| Driver plus two movers, Luton van | ยฃ120 per hour |

Standard hours run from 8am to 7pm. The minimum booking for standard jobs is one hour, which matters if you are moving a single item, a few boxes or a small studio load. The useful price is the total booked time with the right crew, not the smallest hourly advert. After the first hour, driver-only jobs and driver plus one mover jobs are charged in 30 minute increments. Driver plus two movers jobs are charged in full hour increments. A one hour minimum helps smaller London jobs stay proportionate. A low hourly advert with a longer minimum booking can still cost more for a short collection, so always compare the booked time as well as the rate. Crew choice is the next thing to get right, because it changes how quickly the job moves.

Crew size changes the pace of loading and unloading. A higher hourly rate can make sense when the extra help reduces stairs time, heavy lifting or extra trips. Driver only suits lighter jobs where you can help at both ends. That might mean a few boxes, a small furniture collection or a simple storage run. You pay less per hour, but you need to be ready to load and unload with the driver. Driver plus one mover is the middle option we use for many flats and small homes. Two people can handle bulky furniture more safely, keep the van loading organised and work better when the entrance is tight. Driver plus two movers suits bigger loads, heavy furniture and jobs where time matters. A three person crew also helps when there are stairs, longer walks from the van, or several large pieces that need careful handling. Van choice matters too. A Transit van works well for lighter loads and tighter city access. A Luton van gives more space and has a tail lift, which helps with heavier items. Match the crew to your access, load size and the help you can give on the day.

Measure your biggest item and the tightest doorway or stair turn before you book. A wardrobe that will not go round the landing changes the whole job, and finding that out the day before is far cheaper than finding out with the van outside.

Access and road charges create extras
Take the same sofa and move it from a ground floor flat with a clear loading bay, then move it from a third floor flat where the van has to wait round the corner. The item has stayed the same, but the working time has changed. London man and van extra charges usually come from practical access and route issues. We look at the details before the move, because those details decide whether the job runs quickly or gets held up.- Parking. A nearby legal loading space keeps the job moving. Some streets need a suspension, and London borough councils set their own rules.
- Stairs and lifts. Stairs add time, and lift bookings can affect when the team can load or unload.
- Loading distance. A short walk from door to van is very different from carrying items through a courtyard or across an estate.
- Road charges. Transport for London lists the Congestion Charge at ยฃ18 if paid in advance or on the day, and ยฃ21 if paid by midnight on the third day after travel.
- ULEZ. ULEZ, London’s emission zone, can affect vans that fall outside the required standard. TfL lists a ยฃ12.50 daily charge for non compliant cars, vans and minibuses.
- Distance. Our local rates cover trips up to five miles. Longer trips may have an agreed distance fee.

Have everything boxed and stacked near the door before the crew arrives. The clock runs on booked time, so packing while the van waits is the most expensive way to pack.

Fair quotes are easy to check
Once you have the hourly rate, crew, van and likely extras, the quote becomes much easier to read. The problem with a very low advert is that you still need to know what sits behind it.The price lines
A fair quote shows the van, crew, minimum time and agreed extras, not just an hourly rate. It should make clear whether you are getting a Transit van or a Luton van, how many movers are coming, and how the time is charged after the first hour. Distance also needs a line of its own when the move goes beyond the local mileage. Parking, waiting time and road charges should be visible too, especially for central London routes or buildings with strict loading rules. A written quote for a larger move can go further than an hourly booking. It can set out the main load, access points and any agreed extras in one place, which gives you something solid to compare. The team behind the price
Price is easier to trust when you know who is responsible for the job. At GT Removals, we use our own employed, trained team on every move, and we publish our rates clearly so you can compare the real job rather than a loose starting figure. Cover is worth asking about on any quote you receive. Goods in transit insurance means cover for your belongings while they are on the van. Public liability insurance covers damage to property or injury to other people during the move. Ask what a provider actually holds before you weigh their price against anyone else’s. Equipment also tells you something. A Luton van with a tail lift, proper moving kit and the right number of people changes how heavy or awkward items are handled. Once you can read the quote line by line, the low advert loses its pull and the proper comparison becomes simple: the right van, the right crew and every extra agreed before the move.
