Hiring a van yourself or booking a man and van? How to pick the right one

Should you hire a van yourself or book a man and van for your move?

The better choice is the lower full move cost, not the lower van price. We compare the whole job: lifting help, parking, fuel, London charges, insurance, time and damage risk. Self-drive works for simple moves with help; man and van suits moves where labour and cover matter.

The quick answer is the full move cost

Many people see a one-day van hire price and treat it as the moving cost. That is where the comparison goes wrong. A move also includes getting to the hire branch, returning the van, loading, unloading, fuel, parking, possible road charges, equipment, insurance excess and the risk of damage.

Here is the fairer way to compare self-drive van hire and a man and van service.

What you are comparing Self-drive van hire Man and van service
Headline cost Vehicle hire rate, plus extras that depend on the booking Hourly or fixed price, depending on the job
Labour You and your helpers do the lifting Loading and unloading are part of the service
Time You collect, load, drive, unload and return the van The team arrives with the van and works through the move
Insurance Usually focused on the hired vehicle and third-party liability Should include goods in transit insurance and public liability insurance, if properly covered
London logistics You handle parking, access, route choices and charges The team should plan loading, access and route practicalities
Best fit Small, light moves with easy parking and reliable help Flats, stairs, awkward items, tight timing or moves where cover matters

A self-drive van hire cost can look lower at first because it gives you the vehicle, not the full moving service. If you already have time, strong helpers and easy access at both addresses, that can still be the right answer.

A man and van quote includes more of the job. You are paying for labour, equipment, driving, loading order and someone taking charge of the move on the day. That matters most when the job has stairs, parking distance, awkward furniture or a tight time window.

So the question is simple: which option gets your items from one address to the other with the least total cost, effort and risk?

The self-hire option suits small, simple moves

Self-hire has a proper place. If you are moving a few boxes, a student room, a small furniture collection or a short local load, hiring a van yourself can make sense.

Good self-drive moves have the same pattern. The load is light enough to lift safely, the route is familiar, parking is close, and someone reliable can help at both ends. You also need enough spare time for the parts that do not appear in the headline price, including collecting the van, loading it, unloading it and returning it before the deadline.

Driving confidence matters. A loaded van feels different from a car, especially on narrow streets, when reversing, or when trying to stop close to a London flat. A Luton van, meaning a large box van with a tail lift, can be useful for space and heavier items, but it is still a bigger vehicle to handle.

GOV.UK says a driver with a standard UK car licence can drive a van up to 3,500kg, or a zero-emission electric or hydrogen-powered van up to 4,250kg. You still need to check your licence entitlement and the vehicleโ€™s design gross weight, also called gross vehicle weight or laden weight. The VIN plate, meaning the vehicle identification number plate, shows the legal weight details.

The practical test is whether you can finish the whole job without turning a simple saving into a long day of lifting, driving, waiting and extra trips.

Compare the total job cost, not the van rate alone. Add lifting help, fuel, parking, road charges and the time needed to collect and return the van.

Why London logistics change the calculation

A one-bed flat can look like a simple move until the van cannot stop outside, the lift is too small, and every item has to be carried through the building to a legal loading spot. In that setup, the van is not the main issue. The carrying distance is.

London moves depend heavily on access. A short drive across town can still take longer than expected if the loading bay is occupied, the building has time rules, or a parking suspension was not arranged. Flats without lifts change the workload again because loading becomes the slowest part of the move.

At GT Removals, we see this most with London flats where the distance from front door to van decides the pace of the job. A Luton van with tail lift can make loading heavier items easier, but it does not solve a long stair carry or a narrow hallway by itself.

Road charges also belong in the total cost. Transport for London says the Congestion Charge is ยฃ18 if paid on the day, or ยฃ21 if paid within 3 days. The Ultra Low Emission Zone, known as ULEZ, the Low Emission Zone and other road user charges depend on the vehicle, route, timing and zone. The vehicle registration mark is used to check what applies.

Good London planning is plain work: know where the van can stop, check the building rules, allow for the carry, and price the job around the real access.

The insurance gap is easy to miss

The first thing to check is what the word insurance actually covers. Vehicle cover and belongings cover are different things, and mixing them up can make one option look better value than it is.

Vehicle cover is not belongings cover

Self-drive hire agreements usually focus on the van and third-party liability, which means liability to other people or property. That does not mean your belongings are covered while you move them.

Collision Damage Waiver, also called CDW, is another detail to read carefully. CDW can reduce the amount you pay if the hired vehicle is damaged, but it should not be treated as cover for your furniture, boxes or cargo. Cargo damage sits in a different place, and the hire agreement needs to be read with that in mind.

A man and van quote should name the cover

A man and van quote should say what cover is included. The two terms to look for are goods in transit insurance, which covers belongings while they are being transported, and public liability insurance, which covers damage to property or injury to third parties during the move.

At GT Removals, we include goods in transit insurance and public liability insurance on man and van bookings, and we put the price in writing. That gives you something clearer to compare than a low hourly rate with no detail behind it.

Insurance does not make damage impossible, but it changes who carries the risk if something goes wrong.

Check the insurance wording before you book. Vehicle cover and cover for your belongings are separate, and the difference matters if anything gets damaged in transit.

The best choice follows the whole job

Once you stop comparing only the vehicle price, the decision becomes easier. Start with what you are moving, how hard it is to get to the van, who is doing the lifting, and how much time you can afford to lose if the plan takes longer than expected.

Use this as a quick guide:

  • Choose self-hire if the move is light, simple and well supported. It suits a few boxes, a small student move or a single item where parking is close and you are comfortable driving the van.
  • Choose man and van if you need loading help, a larger vehicle, insured handling or someone used to London access. This is often the better fit for studio flats, one-bed flat moves, awkward furniture and stairs.
  • Look at a fuller removal service if the move has several rooms, packing materials, dismantling, fragile items or a long carry. A basic man and van booking can be too small for a larger house move.
  • Before comparing prices, check what is included. Fuel, parking, road charges, equipment, waiting time, insurance and written pricing all affect the real number.

The better question was never simply whether to hire a van yourself or book a man and van. The better question is which option prices the whole job honestly and matches the work in front of you. Once you judge it that way, the lowest vehicle price stops being the main measure of value.

Questions we get asked about van hire and man and van

Do man and van services help with loading and unloading?

Yes, loading and unloading are normally part of a man and van service, but you should check how many people are included. A one-person booking gives less lifting support than a two-person team.

Does a hired van include cover for my furniture?

A hired van may include vehicle insurance and third-party liability, but that is not the same as cover for your belongings. You need to read the hire agreement and check whether cargo damage is excluded.

Do I need to pay London road charges in a hired van?

You may need to pay charges depending on the vehicle, route, timing and zone. Use the vehicle registration mark to check the Congestion Charge, Ultra Low Emission Zone and other charges before you drive.

Is a Luton van right for a one-bed flat move?

A Luton van can suit many one-bed flat moves because it has a large box body and usually a tail lift. Access matters as much as size, so stairs, parking distance and lift limits can change what works best.

Is man and van the same as a full removal service?

No. A man and van service usually suits smaller moves, single items and flats with fewer belongings. A fuller removal service is better when you need packing, more movers, planning time or support with a larger home.

This is general information, not professional advice.
